About the Role

We are seeking a Technical Director to take technical ownership of our core product Rentalscape. This role is for a seasoned leader who is highly experienced in Full Stack Architecture and possesses a genuine passion for Site Reliability Engineering (SRE). You will lead an existing, high-performing engineering team and act as the technical custodian of our most important product.

Your focus is the integrity and evolution of the Rentalscape application platform. You will own the "top half" of the stack: the frontend interfaces, the GraphQL services, and the serverless APIs. You will inherit an established group and focus on elevating their output, refining our platform architecture, and ensuring the long-term health of our flagship product.

While our central Ops team owns global infrastructure, you must be a vocal advocate for SRE within the Rentalscape team. We need someone who prioritizes building reliability into the code and driving the implementation of observability and performance standards as a core part of the product.

What You Will Do

  • Technical Stewardship: Lead the existing Rentalscape engineering team, ensuring the frontend, APIs, and backend services are stable, performant, and scalable.
  • Full Stack & Platform Architecture: Own the technical direction of our React/TypeScript frontend and Python serverless backend. You will ensure the architecture supports complex data visualizations, geospatial tools, and GraphQL-based services.
  • SRE Passion: Drive a culture of reliability. You will be the primary advocate for SRE within the product team, maturing our observability, system uptime, and incident response practices in collaboration with the central Ops team.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Oversee the infrastructure strategy for Rentalscape, specifically using Pulumi to manage our serverless AWS environment in alignment with global standards.
  • Product Partnership: Work as a strategic peer to the Product Management team to balance feature delivery with long-term platform health and technical debt management.
  • Process Transformation: Improve engineering velocity by championing AI-driven development tools and modernising CI/CD workflows across the organisation.
  • Strategic Influence: Participate in setting technical standards company-wide.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience: 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or directorial role managing established teams.
  • Architecture & Full Stack: Extensive experience building and scaling React/TypeScript applications and designing robust APIs. GraphQL experience is highly valued.
  • SRE Credentials: A deep-seated belief in SRE principles.
  • Serverless & Cloud: Experience with AWS Lambda and serverless patterns.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Strong proficiency in Pulumi or similar tools like Terraform.
  • Python Ecosystem: Strong Python development skills, including experience with ORMs and cloud SDKs.
  • Data-Intensive Applications: Experience with relational databases at scale (PostgreSQL) and exposure to modern data warehouses (Snowflake, Redshift, or similar).
  • Observability & DevOps: Experience with APM platforms (Datadog or similar) and designing automated CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or similar).
  • AI Advocacy: A proactive approach to using AI-enhanced development tools to improve automation and developer experience.
  • Communication: Exceptional ability to navigate trade-offs with Product Managers and influence technical direction across a global organization.

Why Join Us

  • Lead a Flagship: Take the reins of our most successful and critical product and its dedicated team.
  • Direct Influence: Shape the technical culture and standards of a global company without unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Modern Stack: Work with a contemporary serverless-first architecture featuring React, TypeScript, Python, GraphQL, and Pulumi.
  • Architectural Ownership: Solve unique challenges at the intersection of complex frontend interfaces and highly reliable service delivery.
  • Flexibility: A hybrid work environment that values autonomy and professional expertise.
