About the Role

Deckard is looking for a Staff Platform Engineer to join our Engineering Operations function. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who thrives on building the systems, tooling, and infrastructure that let engineering teams move fast and safely.

You will work across the full platform stack - from cloud infrastructure and deployment pipelines to developer experience, observability, and security compliance. You'll report to the Director of Engineering Operations and work closely with engineering teams across Deckard's products, including Rentalscape and Cyborg.

This is a high-trust, high-autonomy role. You will be expected to bring strong technical opinions, execute with precision, and help set the standards that the broader engineering organisation works to.

This role is Hybrid and attendance to our Sydney based office is required.

What You'll Do

Infrastructure & Cloud

  • Design, build, and maintain Deckard's AWS infrastructure using Pulumi (IaC)
  • Own cloud architecture decisions across compute, networking, storage, and data services
  • Manage and evolve infrastructure supporting PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, Lambda, and Step Functions etc.
  • Drive cost efficiency, reliability, and scalability across environments

Developer Experience & Tooling

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and AWS CodeBuild
  • Create self-service tooling and platform abstractions that reduce toil for engineering teams
  • Establish and maintain golden-path patterns for service deployment, configuration, and onboarding
  • Champion platform adoption through documentation, internal tooling, and direct collaboration with squads

Security & Compliance

  • Support Deckard's SOC 2 and PCI-DSS compliance posture through infrastructure controls, audit logging, and evidence collection
  • Implement and maintain security guardrails across cloud environments
  • Partner with Engineering Operations on policy enforcement, access controls, and vulnerability management
  • Contribute to security incident response and remediation efforts

Reliability & Observability

  • Define and implement observability standards using Datadog (metrics, logs, traces, monitors)
  • Lead incident response tooling and on-call process improvements
  • Establish SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets in collaboration with product engineering teams
  • Drive post-mortem culture and systematic reliability improvements

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with Python packaging tooling (Poetry, pip) and dependency management in Lambda environments
  • Python skills; familiarity with PostgreSQL as part of the broader application context
  • Working knowledge of SOC 2 and/or PCI-DSS compliance requirements as they apply to cloud infrastructure

Who You Are

  • You operate at staff level - you drive work independently, influence without authority, and raise the bar for those around you
  • You are pragmatic. You prefer simple, maintainable solutions over clever ones
  • You are compliance-aware without being compliance-paralysed
  • You document your work and leave things better than you found them
  • You ask hard questions early and communicate blockers clearly

The Opportunity

This is a foundational role in a growing Engineering Operations function with broad scope and a direct line to how Deckard's platform evolves. You'll have genuine ownership over technical decisions, work across multiple product teams, and help define what 'good' looks like for platform engineering at Deckard.
